Gummi Shark Mutations
Mutations
While Gummi Sharks do not have many mutations compared to Candy Bites and other candy creatures, they do have a few. In terms of Gummi Sharks, mutations are traits that were not natural genetics and that are said to have been introduced as features via outside sources like poisons, modification, or extreme conditions. Many of these would count as body deformities, though usually don't cause a fuss amongst the Gummi Shark community. Most are not hazardous to their health with some even being a common mutation. However there are a couple that would count as horrifying to other sharkies, and may be hunted by those truly scared of them.
Common Mutations
Note: These will not be listed since they aren't rare, however if you're unsure if your Gummi Shark has one of these features, feel free to ask!

Embossed Chest
This is actually a very common mutation that sometimes appears in the chest area of Gummi Sharks. They can vary in shape and depth of the indent, and sometimes are accompanied with strange feeler type strings hanging off their collar bone. Some Gummi Sharks have very little attraction to these while others may have more attraction. Some sharkie with an embossed chest and especially strings may find it cumbersome when to wear certain clothes or get close to their mate. Despite this, many resist trying to flatten the embossed gumminess and cutting the strings as they have heard of legends of these features saving many sharkies' lives from death. They can act as a layer of chest armor and keeping their collar bone from breaking. Their origins are suggested to be from a gang of Gummi Sharks tampering with slightly poisonous liquids to protect their hearts, and the result was extra layers of gumminess on their chests from the allergic reaction. Where the strings come from are a whole other mystery however. |
Curled (and Twisted) Ears
Another common mutation is curled ears. Although these may be seen quite often nowadays, they were not present for a very long time during the beginning days of Gummi Sharks. Legend says that there was a clan of sharkies that were struck by a powerful force that caused their ears to twist and turn in painful ways. It's also said that these curled ears were passed down onto their offspring and descendants. Whether this is true or not will remain a mystery, but do not fear, sharkies with curled ears do not suffer pain from their curled ears! Ear Holes (Holey Ears) Sometimes holes are applied to the ear manually for fashion and beauty. However there are many cases where Gummi Sharks are born with holes in their ears. Some say these natural-born Gummi Sharks with ear holes are descendants of the Rotten Clan. According to Gulisian folktale, the Rotten Clan was a group of gangs that participated in eating foods poisonous to themselves to buff up their resistance in general. (you can read more about this tale here) From this dangerous act, their ears started forming holes as well as other undesirable results that will be mentioned later in this section. |
Special Mutations
Note: These features will be listed! If your Gummi Shark is not marked with having one of these features, they most probably do not have them. Please do not add this features unless given specific permission.
These are mutations that have positive effect on other Gummi Sharks, whether it’s kinder treatment or even extreme admiration. They can’t help but care for anyone with these features, which can be conflicting with their ideals and values. Some believe that these were put onto Gummi Sharks to manipulate and control who rules and who doesn’t, but that is only a speculation that has yet to be proven.

Folded Ears
Folded ears are a strange type of a mutation. Originally it was thought that Gummi Sharks with this mutation were born with “broken” ears, which led to treating them as gently as possible. (or as weaklings for those that were really cruel.) Eventually a myth had formed that these Gummi Sharks were really meant to be pups forever. Many whispered that the ears came from a clan that searched for a “fountain of youth” they heard humans allude to all the time. The tale mentioned that this fountain was found in the depths of the Jelly Sea itself. This clan was said to have found the fountain successful and drank greedily from its pools. However they got a result they didn’t bargain for; they were all aged back too far! The horror of being pups again had struck them, and after many years passed, they never grew. Each one afflicted with this had one or both of their ears folded. To make matters worse, every insult or affliction caused them to accelerate in age at a terrifying rate. They had to be treated kindly and gently or the offender would see the horror of a Gummi Shark withering and melting before their eyes. It wasn’t long until every member was banished from the rest of Gummi Shark society for their own safety and to spare the eyes of others from these horrors. While many members of the clan wallowed in despair and loneliness, one of the members kept their focus on reversing this unfortunate event. After years of research, they created an antidote! With a drink of this antidote, their growth rate was restored to normal, and they no longer suffered from the effects of this strange condition. The only scar left upon them was their folded ears that passed down into their decedents and so on. It is very rare to see a sharkie with folded ears, and while it’s said the the condition was destroyed long ago, others still treat those with folded ears slightly more gently than they do others. |
Sprinkle/Topping Freckles
Many claimed Bifreckled sharkies (an oddity, more about it can be read here) are the most beautiful in the sea. They have nothing on sharkies with the sprinkle/topping freckle mutation. Sprinkle or topping freckles very rarely appear on sugar freckled Gummi Sharks. These can range from different big decorative sweets like confetti, marshmallows, to shaped sprinkles, cookie crumbles, and so on. This strange occurrence is labeled as a blessing in beauty and most of all... cuteness. Any Gummi Shark with this mutation will be bombarded with coos and pinching of the cheeks. Even though most Gummi Sharks hate showing affection, something about these freckles just melts their hearts and may have even the toughest sharkie act out of character. Those with this feature may be grumpy or annoyed as a result, but with this sort of effect and influence on others, they can easily bend the rules in their favor. In turn, some started to proclaim themselves as royalty... and others went along with it! It doesn't help that legend says sugar freckled Gummi Sharks of the far far past gained these freckles from being such great leaders, claiming that the admiration quite literally added to their beauty. It is a very odd myth that some say was just made up to justify pampering these "bratty" sharkies, but many believe it anyway. It would also be assumed a Gummi Shark with sprinkle or topping freckles would be a great leader. (Even if it isn't true most of the time) Their sprinkles can be up to 3 different colors which makes them all the more colorful! Plus they can be up to 2 different shapes, causing other Gummi Sharks to squeal over how amazing they look in their eyes. How can you not rule the people when you rule their hearts? |
Event Mutations
Note: These features will be listed! If your Gummi Shark is not marked with having one of these features, then they most probably do not have them. Please do not add this features unless given specific permission.
These mutations happen at certain times of the year or specific points of time according to any human world timeline. Why these are linked to human world time is a mystery, but each of these may loved or feared by shark kind.

Gem Growths
Chance of Gummi Sharks born with this heightens during October or December in Earth human world. Builds up resistance to hits and scarring. Many Gummi Sharks admire this trait, and may wear gems/crystals on their skin to mock this feature for fashion. The one way to tell how a Gummi Shark has real gem growths is the bruising around said gems. (Sometimes this bruising can add another color the the Gummi Shark, but only around the gems) Tail Mouth Chance of Gummi Sharks born with this heightens during October-November in Earth human world. Gummi Sharks with this trait have full control over their tail mouth and will use it as defense. Many may confuse these Gummi Sharks for Candy Bites and chase after them. Age Shifting Chance of Gummi Sharks born with this heightens during December or springtime in human world. Allows a Gummi Shark to switch between any age and age at a much slower rate than others. May bewilder other sharkies, so this trait is feared. |
Jelly Blobs
Chance of Gummi Sharks born with this heightens during October in Earth human world. May jiggle and make movements that makes other sharkies uncomfortable just looking at them. This trait is feared. Winged Back Fins Chance of Gummi Sharks born with this heightens during October or springtime in human world. May give a Gummi Shark swiftness in air and incredible speed in water/jelly. This trait is feared. |
"Abomination" Mutations
Note: These features will be listed! If your Gummi Shark is not marked with having one of these features, then they most probably do not have them. Please do not add this features unless given specific permission.
Perhaps the rarest of all mutations, these mutations are considered sights for sore eyes or traits of beasts that need to be slayed. The existence of these mutations are beyond Gummi Shark comprehension, so as a result Gummi Sharks declare these to be threats to the well-being of their lives. Most of these have a negative effect on Gummi Shark behavior and treatment. There are a few Gummi Shark sub-societies that are created to protect those with these mutations and help keep their existence secret. Some of these societies may use these special Gummi Sharks for their own selfish gain however.

Gushers
What a mystery these Gummi Sharks with this mutation are. With a yawn, tears, or a sneeze, a “Gusher” can make objects appear out of their drool, tears, or even just out of thin air! To do such a thing is not only considered disgusting, but also plain despicable! Some of the objects that appear can range from fruit, clothes, technology that many sharkies don’t even understand, or even… making already existent beings appear where a Gusher stands. It can be startling for those around the Gusher and for the being that appears there. There are no records written or verbal of where such a mutation even came from… But there is a hunch that such an occurrence stemmed from a shark gang called the Wishing Well wishing upon a star too much. The name of the gang changes with every sharkie that tells their one sentence tale, so it is assumed to be untrue. You can usually tell if a sharkie is a Gusher by their sparkly excessive drool or watery eyes. |
Permanently Melted Skin
As previously mentioned, there was a clan called the Rotten Clan that ate poisonous foods to strengthen themselves. Not only did this result in holes in their ears, but a few started to age quickly in physical appearance. Their skin melted at a frightening pace until they appeared to be gooey monsters. They were accused of being ghouls and undead by other Gummi Sharks, sometimes being chased to the ends of the sea by those who feared them the most. This trait also passed down onto generations, though it would be very rare sight to see. Nowadays those with this melted skin are merely classified to have a skin condition, but there are still very negative reactions to their grotesque appearance. |
